First Impressions of Tokyo: Sensō-ji and the Heart of Asakusa

Our first day in Tokyo led us to one of its most iconic sights—the magnificent Hōzōmon Gate at Sensō-ji Temple in Asakusa.

If there is a place that instantly says “Welcome to Tokyo,” this is it.

As we approached the temple grounds, the massive red gate rose above the crowds, its sweeping rooflines and giant lantern creating exactly the kind of scene we had imagined when planning our trip to Japan. Despite the modern city surrounding it, Asakusa feels like stepping into another era. Traditional architecture, colorful lanterns, and centuries-old temples stand just blocks from contemporary high-rise buildings.

The vibrant reds of the gate seemed to glow against the blue sky, and every detail gave us something new to admire. It was impossible not to stop, look up, and take photographs from every angle. I feel very Japanese (pardon the stereotype) as I snapped photo after photo.

As first-time visitors to Tokyo, we were immediately swept up in the atmosphere. Pilgrims offered prayers, tourists snapped photos, and locals moved comfortably through a place that has been at the center of Tokyo life for generations. The scent of incense drifted through the air while the sounds of conversation and laughter echoed beneath the enormous lanterns.

Walking through the gate felt like crossing a threshold into Japan’s cultural heart. Beyond it lay the famous temple grounds, bustling shopping streets, and endless opportunities to explore. It was everything we had hoped for on our first day—beautiful, vibrant, historic, and uniquely Japanese.

There could hardly have been a better introduction to Tokyo. Standing beneath the towering Hōzōmon Gate, camera in hand and excitement building for the days ahead, we knew our adventure in Japan had truly begun.
